“Language” is an art installation shown as the first exhibit in the gallery of our (me and Liucija) newly born creative space Ideas Block LT, in Vilnius, Lithuania. Showing from Feb 9 to March 9, 2017. Work in collaboration with Liucija Dervinyte.
Language is energy. Through voice and language energy is transferred. With different purposes is this energy expressed, molded and conveyed. From a certain perspective, language is only energy what we utter and use it to communicate with others.
Such energy reaches our sensorial input, and its processed as mere impulses, in a way loosing all meaning or sense, until it is interpreted, decoded or understood by the brain structures trained in a set of sound patterns.
Language is nature. It is a natural treat of organisms, and it evolves to its fullest potential, restrained only by the characteristics of the vehicle that carries it. In this vein, language is a shared feature that fulfills the same objective regardless of the species or, in the case of humans, national/cultural tongue.
Information is shared, communication is achieved, messages are transmitted, and the medium is this energy transfer embedded in language and vocal expressions.
Language is flow. This transmission of information is happening in a stream of energy that is emitted and received.
In this installation theses ideas are hinted by means of a long, cylinder-like shape, from floor to ceiling, in the centre of the gallery, made from fabric, dyed producing organic patterns, with tree sections in the base, and light moving inside as a sort of up and downwards flow.
To enhance the concept of the energy content in the voice and language, the sculpture picks up the sound of its surroundings, which in the context of the installation and gallery is made up of people’s voices. The audio is accumulated, looped and played back to the audience, so after time of operating and when excited by the audience’s voices, the installation starts to resonate, feed back on itself and pulsate.
